Kéroul and CTC Launch Best Practices in Tourism Accessibility

Ottawa, June 21, 2004 – Kéroul, in collaboration with the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC), today announced the general availability in English and French of the report of the APEC Tourism Working Group, “Best Practices in Tourism Accessibility for Travelers with Restricted Physical Ability.”

This study, which looked at 19 case studies in 11 economies, identifies a number of novel approaches to making tourism accessible  for travellers with mobility, seeing or hearing disabilities.  From these best practices, readers can draw inspiration for making their tourism sites and destinations attractive to this growing segment of this high-value tourism market.

“For travellers with restricted physical ability, planning and taking a vacation can be somewhat daunting,” said André Leclerc General Director and Kéroul’s Founder. “Yet 15 % of the Canadian population is considered to be physically chalenged and as travellers they tend, on average, to be higher-than-average spenders, in keeping with their special needs.”

 “We are pleased to have worked with Kéroul on this initiative,” said Irenka Farmilo, Director of Industry Relations at the CTC, who oversaw the project. “In the coming years, as the population ages, we can expect increasing number of travellers looking for wheelchair access to planes, trains and buses, large-print signs and symbols at attractions, and other indications that the tourism destination is a good choice for them.” .

Among the best practices are several from Canada; other case studies could be adapted to Canada to help tourism operators develop the potential of this market segment.

The book identifies a best practice as one that serves to:

  • Improve public policies based on what works;
  • Raise awareness of decision makers; and
  • Share and transfer knowledge, expertise and experience through networking and peer-to-peer learning.
