Kéroul and the Société des musées québécois: For better accessibility to museum institutions in Quebec
In the scope of the annual convention of the Société des musées québécois (SMQ) in Québec City, Kéroul and SMQ signed a memorandum of understanding on October 5, 2005, formalizing a closer collaboration between the two organizations. The main objective of this partnership is to increase accessibility of Quebec museum institutions to persons with limited physical abilities.
For Michel Perron, Executive Director of SMQ, and André Leclerc, President and CEO of Kéroul, this memorandum brings together the current concerns of the two organizations in the context of developing cultural tourism. This mutual cooperation will enable them to, among other things, set up mechanisms to heighten awareness and inform museum institutions of the needs of persons with limited physical abilities, in addition to offering training and documentation.
In the words of Michel Perron, "the theme of the 2005 convention, Fidéliser et développer nos publics [develop loyalty and enlarge our audience], illustrates well the importance of improving accessibility of our museum institutions to everyone, including disabled persons." André Leclerc adds, "15% of the Quebec population lives with a disability. Making a cultural site accessible is more than just a question of an access ramp. It is also a question of a welcoming attitude toward persons with limited physical abilities and the elderly. Besides, when a place is accessible, it is accessible to everyone. And access to cultural sites is essential to each person’s quality of life.”
This memorandum of agreement, concluded for three years, reflects both parties’ willingness to do something concrete together. It already provides for Kéroul’s validation, based on its reputable criteria, of information that concerns accessibility of persons with limited physical abilities, published in the new issue of SMQ’s Museum Guide (Internet and printed version).
Representing more than 300 museum institutions and 600 museology professionals of Quebec, SMQ’s mission is to work for the higher interest of the Quebec network of museums. For its part, Kéroul informs, represents, develops and promotes tourism and culture that are accessible to persons with limited physical abilities.
