Developed by Kéroul, The Accessible Road was recently conferred the Ulysses Award for Innovation in Non-Governmental Organizations by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This prize recognizes innovative tourism projects that contribute substantially to the United Nations (UN) Millennium Development Goals.
"The Accessible Road guide to Québec has set the bar in the development of accessible tourism for all, and is now cited as a model in international forums," says Kéroul Founder, President and CEO André Leclerc. "Let's not forget that persons with limited physical ability account for approximately 15% of the population in the Western world, and that this number will only continue to rise given the aging population. So now it’s a matter of markets: these people are active, they travel with family and friends, and they are looking to have fun. They will opt for the tourist and cultural establishments that are equipped to meet their needs and for which information is readily available. That's precisely where The Accessible Road comes in: providing this clientele with information on the destinations that are prepared to accommodate them. And these are loyal customers who will keep going back to those places that offer a hospitable welcome."
The Accessible Road is a listing of 170 tourist and cultural establishments in 13 different tourist regions throughout the province that are adapted to the needs of persons with physical limitations and whose staff have received training from Kéroul. More than 1,250 of these establishments' employees have obtained Welcoming Ways certification.
Kéroul would like to thank the Ministčre du Tourisme du Québec and Canada Economic Development for their financial support, as well as the regional tourism associations, businesses and their employees who partnered with Kéroul in the development of The Accessible Road.
