Fixed bench

A fixed shower bench is required by the Quebec Construction Code. However, its location in relation to the grab bars and faucets is not specified. In the field, Kéroul often notices some inconsistencies in their arrangement. In order for a person in a seated position to be able to use the faucets and the showerhead, the fixed shower bench must be installed near these elements. The illustration in the guideBarrier-free design standards (PDF) New tabshows it well.

Removable bench

Kéroul recommends that accommodation establishments also equip themselves with a removable shower bench. This type of bench is generally preferable to fixed benches, since it is more versatile. It can be positioned as needed, and some models even allow the backrest to be adjusted to have the armrest on the left or right side.

A removable shower bench must:

  • Be rigid and stable
  • Be wide enough to easily transfer
  • Have a file
  • Feature non-slip tips

Two sign languages are used in Quebec: Quebec Sign Language (LSQ) and American Sign Language (ASL).

Sign language interpretation allows for greater cultural accessibility. In Quebec, it is considered a right under the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms. If a person requests interpretation services, it is your responsibility to provide them.

Interpretation rates vary from one interpreter to another and from one company to another. However, they generally average around $70 per hour. For interpretations lasting more than three hours, a second interpreter may be necessary, as this is a very energy-intensive task.
