Accessible and Memorable Leisure Activities with the Fondation des sports adaptés

By Daphnée Gagnage

During our stay in the Eastern Townships organized by Kéroul, my best friend and I, accompanied by our respective partners, had the opportunity to live some amazing experiences. The four of us are passionate about both new sensations and beautiful landscapes, and the Fondation des sports adaptés (FSA) successfully combined both to win us over.

Adapted mountain biking

The first activity we are invited to try is a rather unusual ride. After a few adjustments to get settled, here I am in an electric all-terrain wheelchair, low to the ground with my legs stretched out in front of me.

Of course, I always think, “If I had this at home,” to fully analyze the experience. While I have to admit I couldn’t get into it on my own, this is the only downside I found to this new ride, because without a doubt, the enjoyment was there!

After a few laps in the parking lot to get used to the machine, we set off. My companions are riding electric bikes and are just as delighted as I am. I happily rediscover one of my able-bodied pleasures: walking through the forest. When you use a manual wheelchair, truly accessible forest trails are rare. I had to come all the way to Quebec to enjoy this privilege: moving through the forest regardless of the ground conditions.

After exploring some beautiful spots that amazed us, our guide takes us to a large open grassy area. The goal? To test my machine by picking up speed in a straight line. With a smile on my face, I discover what the wheelchair is capable of. Even if I am sometimes caught off guard by changes in terrain, I gradually learn to handle it.

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. After a little over an hour, and some discomfort from my unusual position, I reluctantly leave my adapted bike.

Paddleboarding

The next day, we meet by a lovely lake. The sun is shining brightly, matching our moods. It is time for us to try a new activity: paddleboarding.

Since my wheelchair has small electric components in the wheels, I prefer to use a wheelchair provided for this outing. Once seated, the FSA volunteers help me onto the board. My wheels are secured into slots, and flotation devices on each side ensure perfect stability. It is almost impossible to fall into the water thanks to these clever adaptations.

The ride is enjoyable. I take in the scenery and the calm atmosphere. I try to paddle a little, but my shoulders and left hand limit my movements. I therefore mostly enjoy a contemplative moment, far from the adrenaline of the day before.

Two complementary experiences, two different emotions

I am very happy to be able to add to my list of activities experienced despite my disability these two wonderful experiences made possible by Kéroul and the FSA. My heart leans more toward the one that made me feel active, that scared me at times but above all made me laugh: the all-terrain electric wheelchair. This does not take away from the appeal of paddleboarding on the lake, which is calmer and almost meditative… on the water, at least!
