Reconnecting with the Outdoors: The Joy of Adaptive Cycling

By Benjamin Leclair

To escape our daily routine, we often feel the urge to go somewhere else, chasing a breath of fresh air. But sometimes, life throws unexpected challenges our way—ones that force us to redefine how we relate to the world.

Since the accident that left me quadriplegic, I’ve learned that every moment matters. The small things in life, often overlooked, can become invaluable sources of joy. That’s how I discovered adaptive cycling, an activity that helped me reconnect with nature, regain a sense of belonging, and push my limits. Through it, I rediscovered my region, Montérégie, from a whole new perspective.

The Soulanges Canal bike path, with its 35 km of paved trail, has become one of my favourite places. Stretching between Pointe-des-Cascades and Les Coteaux, it offers an exceptional setting where the beauty of nature meets peaceful surroundings. As I pedal along the water, I’m often struck by the serenity around me: the sound of the water, the birds, and the reflection of trees dancing on the calm surface of the canal.

Adaptive cycling gave me the opportunity to experience powerful moments of camaraderie, especially through the charity race Wings for Life. Alongside other athletes—both able-bodied and disabled—we share a common goal: pushing ourselves beyond our limits. Every year, on the first Sunday in May, participants from around the world join together through an app to race and raise funds for spinal cord research. This event became a turning point in my rehabilitation, allowing me to reconnect with physical activity in a shared experience with friends and family.

It’s a chance to motivate each other, to rise to the challenge, and to enjoy the simple joy of sport. That camaraderie is precious. It reminds me that I am not a burden—I’m an active member of a community that values perseverance and pushing boundaries.

When I ride along the canal, I’m deeply aware of both the physical and mental benefits that movement brings me. Every turn of the wheels gives me a sense of freedom I hadn’t felt in a long time. The fresh air on my face, the warmth of the sun on my skin, even the soft friction of tires on asphalt—all of it grounds me in the present moment. This practice gives me an escape, a break from a routine that can sometimes feel heavy.

I remember my first ride on this path. I had finally found a place where I could focus solely on moving forward in a straight line. I quickly realized it was the perfect space to challenge myself physically. The trail is relatively flat, with few inclines—ideal for my handcycle. I can enjoy the beauty of the landscape without worrying about overexertion. Each pedal stroke brings me closer to nature, and I rediscover a simple pleasure: the joy of moving and exploring.

The Soulanges Canal is much more than just a bike path. It’s where I’ve met friends, riding companions, and even others—like me—who’ve had to reinvent their relationship with mobility. Together, we share smiles, the effort of each push, and laughter. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned athlete, no matter how you get around, this place is accessible to all.
